IOC: Dutch judo gold medalist Anton Geesink dies

 TAMPA, Aug 28: Dutch IOC member and judo gold medalist Anton Geesink has passed away in his home town of Utrecht at the age of 76.

Geesink was remembered for his gold medal at the Tokyo 1964 Games and World Judo Champion in 1961, 1964 and 1965.

Also a winner of 21 European Judo Championship titles, he was Dutch judo champion several times and a three-time national champion in Greco-Roman wrestling.

Elected to the IOC in 1987, he also served as honorary advisor to the Dutch Secretary of State for Sport (Erica Terpstra), an honorary member of the International Judo Federation (IJF) and a lifetime honorary president of the European Judo Union.

He also authored eleven books and wrote many articles on his specialty judo and sports education.
