SEOUL, Aug 23: Local athletes from PyeongChang have become the latest sportsmen and women to put their best foot forward in support of the city's bid to win host rights to the 2018 Winter Olympics.

A 10km run around the Alpensia Resort which would host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies was the event. Some 43 teams took part under the organisational control of the PyeongChang Athletics Federation.

PAF president Bum-yeon Lee said: “We are delighted to host this race in such beautiful surroundings. The event was planned originally to celebrate PyeongChang’s selection as a candidate city and we expect that events such as these will continue to build enthusiasm for the bid not only within the region but across the country.”

Olympic Village

Alpensia is one of the principal Olympic clusters in the bid’s Games Plan and would also be the location of the main Olympic Village and host competitions such as the cross-country and biathlon.

PyeongChang organisers also hosted a cross-country challenger mountain bike race with more than 1,200 participants in Jungbong which is the proposed venue for Alpine skiing.

PyeongChang 2018 chairman and ceo, Yang Ho Cho said: “The sporting events held across PyeongChang this past weekend highlights our passion for sport, no matter what the season. As part of our bid for the 2018 Winter Games, we aim to show that our venues and facilities are multi-purpose and can be enjoyed by people all year round.”
