TAMPA/PYEONGCHANG, Aug 11: Members of the South Korea National Assembly from the Gangwon Province in a meeting Tuesday expressed their unyielding support behind the 2018 winter Games bid. The meeting was focused on the upcoming visit by the IOC Evaluation Commission and building venue/transportation infrastructures.
National Assemblyman, Yeon Hee Choi, who chaired the meeting, said “The Korean people have wanted to bring the Olympic Winter Games to PyeongChang for a long time, and PyeongChang has invested a huge amount of time, effort and real investment into bid preparations. Like the Government, the National Assembly is ready to provide full and strong support for PyeongChang’s bid to host the 2018 Games.”
One of the priorities discussed at the meeting was the early construction of the double-tracked express railroad between Wonju and Gangneung through PyeongChang. The railroad is due to be finished in 2017 and will be a key linkage in the bid’s transport network. The bid’s compact nature will make for easy connections between the venue clusters.
Bid chairman Yang Ho Cho said: “We thank the National Assembly members representing Gangwon Province for taking the time to gather together and discuss the bid. The National Assembly has always been very supportive of our bid, already declaring the ‘Resolution of Support for Hosting the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games’ in June. We are very pleased that there is absolute commitment for our bid and the new infrastructure being built at all levels of government.”
The PyeongChang bid is in the bid race against Annecy and Munich for the chance to host the 2018 winter Olympics. Bringing the Games to the Korean alpine area will strongly support the development of winter sports in Asia.
