TAMPA/PYEONGCHANG, Aug 5: PyeongChang bid for the 2018 winter Games has appointed four time Olympian Kwang-bae Kang as the new director in charge of sports.

Kang has competed for South Korea in four winter Olympics Nagano 1998 (Luge), Salt Lake City 2002 (Skeleton), Torino 2006 (Skeleton), and Vancouver 2010 (Four-man Bobsleigh). In Vancouver he was the national team flag bearer and brings a wealth of experience for technical insight about the city’s competition venues.

He will direct the planning and preparation of the bid prior to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) evaluation commission visit in 2011, and will help promote the bid at international sporting events.

Kwang-bae Kang said: “I am delighted to join the PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee and to be handed this important responsibility. Our focus for the Games is to deliver the best platform for athletes to achieve their maximum potential, and I am committed to ensuring PyeongChang 2018’s Olympic Winter Games Plan offers convenience, comfort and a great setting for outstanding athletic performances.”
Yang-ho Cho, Chairman and CEO of the PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee said: “We are very pleased to appoint Kwang-bae Kang in the important role of Sports Director, and his Olympic Winter Games experience, insight and knowledge will be an asset for the Bid Committee as we look forward to the Host City announcement next year.
“Alongside many other athletes working with the Bid Committee, Kwang-bae Kang has played a crucial role in the development of our Games Plan. Our Bid is focused on meeting the needs of the athletes and with their advice and support we have created the most compact Games Plan in Olympic Winter Games history.”

Kang has been involved with PyeongChang 2018 already since May 2010 as a member of the athlete's committee supporting the bid.
The final bid file must be submitted to the IOC by January 11, 2011 and PyeongChang is vying to host the winter Games with Munich and Annecy. After the bid files are submitted evaluations will be carried out then site visits by the IOC evaluation commission in the spring. The final decision will be at the IOC Session next July in Durban, South Africa.
