LAUSANNE/MUNICH, June 24: Olympic city Munich geared up for Olympic Day celebrations gathering a good 30,000 fans to the Olympic Stadium to catch the Germany v Ghana FIFA World Cup match live on a giant screen.
Tuesday’s festivities at the Marienplatz followed the IOC’s announcement about the Munich 2018 bid being rubber stamped as candidate city in the race to host the winter Games.
Bid ceo Willy Bogner said, “The Olympic Day is an excellent way to teach young people about Olympic values. Society has much to learn from sport. We want to spread the Olympic message across Munich, Bavaria and Germany, and to teach the importance of striving for excellence in the spirit of fair competition. Whether it is a FIFA World Cup game or a race to host the Olympic Games – our core values of excellence, respect and fairness are indispensable.”
The celebrations allowed the Munich bid team to present movies and speeches to the public and fans to incite the excitement about the bid. A good 70% of the citizens of Munich support the movement to bring the Olympics back to the 1972 host city.
Munich will be competing in the race for the 2018 Games against Annecy, France and PyeongChang, Korea with the final decision taking place at the IOC session July 2011 in Durban, South Africa.
