LAUSANNE/LONDON, June 21: Two players at Wimbledon, Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, are taking a stand to promote the Peace and Sport at one of the world’s top sporting events.
The players are from India and Pakistan and together with their technical supplier Lotto Sport Italia, they are making a statement by wearing t-shirts and sweatshirts emblazoned with “Stop War, Start Tennis” for pre-competition training sessions. Rohan is currently ranked 54th on the worldwide doubles list of players, and Aisam, currently ranks 46th, on the singles list. The two share a ten year old friendship and have teamed up to promote peace during the past three years.
Both their countries have lived in a situation of distress in the region of Kashmir since it won its independence from the British Empire in 1947. Therefore the Peace and Sport initiatives offered a common ground so show just how much a peacemaking role that sport can play, as highlighted by the two players’ partnership.
Peace and Sport founder and president, Joël Bouzou, said, “Rohan and Aisam are big stars in their respective countries. Their story of friendship through sport is a real inspiration for youngsters.
“By transmitting a message of peace, they hope to change the mentalities and attitudes in India and Pakistan as well as other areas of the world destabilized by conflict. We are extremely proud to support this message that will benefit from the extensive publicity that Wimbledon attracts.”
T-shirt and sweatshirt supplier Lotto Sport Italia is the Italian leader in the production and distribution of sports apparel, footwear and accessories.
Alberto Fraticelli Marketing & Communications Director, Lotto Sport Italia adds, “Through their initiative and personal backgrounds, Aisam et Rohan are perfect incarnations of this philosophy; thanks to sport we can rise above the hate and prejudice that condemns mankind to perpetual conflict, and we are extremely proud to have international representation of our brand, through players like Rohan and Aisam.”
Peace and Sport is a Monegasque organization looking to promote sustainable peace by raising awareness and educating youth about peace using sport as its vehicle. It is also a humanitarian organization under the patronage of Prince Albert II of Monaco.
