TAMPA, June 18: Thousands of people are expected at Munich’s Marienplatz for the official announcement this next Tuesday when the 2018 winter Olympic Games applicant cities are set to become real candidates. Approval by the IOC executive board will initiate the next round of the 2018 bid race.

A live video feed will show the IOC Executive Board announcement on a huge screen in the square for everyone to celebrate the next phase in the bid process. As there are only three cities vying for the 2018 winter Games it is widely expected that the IOC will rubber stamp the three applicant cities Annecy, Munich, and PyeongChang.

Bid ceo Willy Bogner sent a warm invite to ‘the people of Bavaria who passionately believe in Munich’s bid to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games’ to come out and share the moment.

Bogner said, “This is an exciting time for the Munich 2018 Bid Committee, and for the whole region. Now is the time for us to demonstrate our passion for winter sports that has made Germany one of the most successful winter sports nations ever, and to show that traditional strongholds like Bavaria remain the lifeblood of the winter sports movement.”

The event promises to be colorful with messages from the mayor of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Thomas Schmid, and a number of the Munich 2018 Bid’s sports ambassadors, including three times Olympic luge champion Georg Hackl.

Even the German soccer team competing at the World Cup will be sending their well wishes for the Olympic bid from South Africa.

The Munich bid plays a strong card with the ’72 legacy and would make a first that one city has hosted a summer and winter Games. The bid committee also has developed a comprehensive environmental plan that is looking to raise the bar on hosting standards for the Olympic Movement.

The host city will be selected at the IOC Session to be held in Durban in July of 2011 almost a year away.
