TAMPA/ANNECY, May 26: The French bid of Annecy is looking to make a statement by thinking green for the 2018 winter Olympics with the support of their new energy partner.

The “Compagnie Nationale du Rhône” (CNR) has the concession of the Rhône river with three different uses: hydroelectric production, improving navigation, irrigation
and other agricultural uses. CNR then sells their 100% renewable energy to the European market.

Annecy 2018 ceo and Olympian Edgar Grospiron says, “We share the same values as the CNR tied to sustainable development and saving the environment. Their concept capitalizes on existing sites, encourages group and new means of transportation, and high quality environment requirements.”

The official signing included Christian Monteil, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Gilles Bernard, representative of Jean-Luc Rigaut, Co-chairman, Edgar Grospiron, Annecy 2018 ceo and Michel Margnes, ceo of the “Compagnie Nationale du Rhône” (CNR).

Jean-Pierre Vidal, who is head of the Annecy 2018 Sustainable Development Advisory Group and also Olympic Champion makes a point to emphasize the environmental awareness.  He says, “As with the Annecy 2018 project, the CNR works toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“Annecy 2018 naturally places environmental stakes at the heart of the bid and has committed to Games with a positive carbon footprint.”

The French bid is ramping up with more and more solid backing from French corporations.

Christian Monteil, Chairman of the supervisory board and President of the Haute-Savoie General Council was particularly pleased with the support coming in from the business sector to help bring the Games to France.

“We are particularly proud to include the CNR amongst the Official Partners of the bid”.

Annecy is in the running for the 2018 winter Games against Munich and PyeongChang. The final selection will be held in July 2011 at the IOC Session in Durban, South Africa.
