TAMPA/LONDON, May 19: Boris Johnson the mayor of London has pledged at the Google Zeitgeist event that the city will have free Wi-Fi in time for the 2012 Olympics. If the city can pull it off it will make Olympic history as the first free Wi-Fi Games.
Johnson proclaimed, “Every lamppost and every bus stop will one day very soon, and before the 2012 Olympics, be Wi-Fi enabled.”
The citywide service will be delivered by hotspots built into the existing structure and use the existing electrical supply and be scattered through bus stop areas and public lighting. Already 22 boroughs have signed agreements to be part of the scheme.
This is real news for the hoards of media visiting the city when Wi-Fi and internet connections go for a premium in the main press center. Costs just to have internet access during the Games to file stories can go up into the hundreds with Beijing topping $500 for the two weeks.
The new plan will benefit visitors and locals alike.
Environmentally friendly the mayor also spoke of a new iPhone app that will map out bikes for hire across the city in an effort to get more citizens and visitors into a healthier lifestyle. Users can even see how many bikes are available for hire in the different areas.
