SEOUL, May 18: An athletes committee - echoing the concept created by the International Olympic Committee - has been set up by organisers of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games bid.

It will comprise 24 South Korean winter sports athletes including 2010 Vancouver gold medallists Yu-Na Kim (figure skating), Tae-Bum Mo and Seung-Hoon Lee as well as Sang-Hwa Lee (speed skating).

Additional members of the Athletes Committee include Olympic champions from previous Winter Games such as Lee-Kyung Chun and So-Hee Kim (short track speed skating); and Paralympic Winter Games medallist Sang-Min Han (Alpine skiing).

The responsibility of the Athletes Committee, which has just held its inaugural meeting, is to draw on its members' Games experience and knowledge of international sporting events to advise on sports venues plan and time operations.

Bid co-chairman Yang-Ho Cho said: "We wanted to highlight the important ongoing role that winter sports athletes play in the development of our Games Plan. Our bid is focused on meeting the needs of the athletes and its with their advice and support that we have created the most compact Games Plan in Winter Games history.”
