DUBAI, Apr 28: Bid leaders for the PyeongChang bid to host the 2018 winter Games drove the point home that the Korean bid is looking to boost Asian sports by bringing the Olympics back to the continent after a decade. The last time the winter Games were held in Asia was Nagano 1998 following only one earlier edition held back in 1972 in Sapporo.

Jin-sun Kim, Governor of the Gangwong Province said, "It's not like the Olympic movement owes something to Pyeongchang. But we feel it is very important for the Olympic movement to give Asia the opportunity to host the Games."

Officials meeting with the press also banked high national support for the Games following the strong performance at the Vancouver Olympics with a total of 14 medals including six golds.

Korea placed fifth on the medal nations chart but it was ice skating queen Kim Ju-na who stole the glitter in Vancouver with a stunning performance.

"Ju-na Kim has promised me she will come to events to promote the bid," said Korean Air chairman Cho Yang-ho, who co- chairs the PyeongChang 2018 leadership. He also confirmed that the superstar athlete will accompany the bid team for the final vote in Durban in July 2011 when the IOC will select its host city.

Cho also reiterated that,  in spite of upcoming elections in June for the Gangwon Province where Governor Kim would step down after a third and final term in office, he would continue to hold a prominent position with the bid.
