LONDON/PYEONGCHANG, Apr 13: Snow white is not the only significant colour featuring in PyeongChang’s bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. The importance of green is also being underlined by the formation of an advisory committee aimed at ensuring the guarantee of an environmentally sustainable Games.

The committee will oversee research into low carbon and renewable energy and reports direct to the PyeongChang 2018 environment committee which was established in January.

Experts attached to the advisory committee include 10 specialists drawn from leading research institutions and companies including Samsung, POSCO and Korea Electric.

Their task will be developing measures to reduce carbon emissions at the venues and oversee implementation of the proposals should the city win its beat against competition from Annecy and Munich.

ByeongNam Lee is the bid’s director-general of evaluation preparation and facilities.

He said: “PyeongChang 2018 is making environmental sustainability a top priority and we are committed to delivering a low carbon Games. Our plan highlights how we will develop and build venues that will minimise carbon emissions and we’ll utilise the latest technologies and methods to ensure this commitment is fulfilled.”
