Head of triathlon federation ITU joins IOC membership

VANCOUVER, Feb. 20: Triathlon federation chair, Marisol Casado, was elevated to IOC membership to support her sport on the Olympic Programme. ITU has only been involved with three Olympiads but enjoys high popularity worldwide.

Relatively new on the programme, triathlon joined the Olympic Games lineup for the first time in Sydney 2000 to a resounding success. Steadily growing through the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Games the sport is now is solid standing with their leader joining IOC ranks.

ITU was accepted as a member of GAISF in 1990 and in 1991 recognized by the IOC. At the IOC session in Paris in 1994, Triathlon actually gained its place on the Olympic Programme.

Casado has been at the helm of ITU since 2008 after serving as President of the European Triathlon Union, comprising of 41 federations, from 2002 to 2008. She has received the silver medal award “Real Orden del Merito Deportivo Español” for her service to sport.

One of the founding members of the Spanish Triathlon Federation, Casado was Secretary General of the Spanish Triathlon Federation (1989–1994 and 1997–2008), and at the same time held the position as Treasurer for the ITU (1992–1994 and 2000–2008).

Currently she is also a member of the Spanish Olympic Committee and since 2004 has presided over their Women and Sport Commission.
