VANCOUVER, Feb 10: British sportswriter Martyn Ziegler crossed the line between reporter and participant when he took up a selection offer to carry the Olympic torch towards the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

The International Olympic Committee had wanted to involve a member of the British media in the torch relay since London 2012 will be the next Games after Vancouver, and chose Ziegler in recognition of his long experience reporting on the Olympic movement.

Ziegler, chief sports writer of the Press Association, took over for the 500m leg between the Vancouver suburbs of Surrey and Richmond. He described it as: "A fantastic opportunity." The Vancouver torch relay started in Athens last October at the start of a 106-day, 28,000-mile journey.
