What's in a name? The day Cassius Clay became You-Know-Who . . .

THIS DAY (FEBRUARY 07) IN THE WORLD OF SPORT MARKS . . . the 45th anniversary of the day, in 1965, when world heavyweight boxing champion Cassius Clay began using the name Muhammad Ali. In other sports, in 1882, the last bareknuckle fight for the heavyweight boxing championship took place in Mississippi City. In 1949 Joe DiMaggio signed, with the New York Yankees, the first $100,000 contract in major league baseball. In 1994 Michael Jordan signed a contract with the Chicago White Sox to play baseball. WORLD EVENTS – 1478: Birth of Sir Thomas More. 1812: Birth of Charles Dickens. 1986: Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier fled his country to end 28 years of family rule. 1999: death of King Hussein of Jordan.
