MUNICH, Jan. 21: The Munich bid to host the 2018 winter Olympics and Paralympics is going strong with 88pc of the German public supporting the initiative according to a survey released by research firm Ipsos.
Bid ceo Willy Bogner said, “This is a very pleasing survey for Munich 2018 at such an early stage of our campaign. However, there is a long way to go and we will work hard to continue explaining the major benefits of the Games to the people of Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria and all of Germany so that we can continue to enjoy this excellent support.”
The study was carried out through an extract of 3,000 people and even 87% expressed support for the involvement of Germany companies supporting the bid also. Already BMW, Deliotte and Adidas have stepped in backing the bid in the short time the initiative has taken off since October 15, 2009.
The Munich bid is focusing on environmental awareness as well as compact venue placement. Ice sports as well as Alpine events will be held at Garmisch-Partenkirchen with Königssee hosting the ice track events. Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen propose environmentally friendly Olympic Villages.
The 2018 bid cycle will be voted by IOC members at the 123rd IOC Session on 6 July 2011 in Durban, South Africa. Munich hosted the summer Games of 1972 and Garmisch-Partenkirchen hosted 1936 winter Games. Should Munich win the vote this could make an Olympic first for a city to host both summer and winter editions of the Olympic Games.
