SOCHI, Jan. 4: The Sochi Olympic venues of Krasnaya Polyana were test driven by non other than Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Sunday to take note on the progress. It is a rare event to have the Olympic venues prescreened by the heads of state.

Amid snow flurries the two Russian leaders enjoyed a working holiday at the resort skiing and snowmobiling and mixing a little work and pleasure. After hitting the slopes they took time out for tea to discuss and exchange experiences and meet with tourists taking photos and signing autographs.

Last year the two also spent their end of the year holidays at the mountain ski resort Roza Khutor area too. Both Putin and Medvedev are strong supporters for the Sochi Games and many attribute the IOC choice to Putin’s power lobbying to win the vote in July 2007.

The Russian government is estimate to be spending more than US$33m to develop the venues and area to host the Games. Russia has never held a winter Olympics only the Moscow summer Games. The move is to boost Russian tourism and open new doors for winter sports.

The Sochi Olympics will be held from the 7-23 February 2014.
