TAMPA, Jan. 1: As the world celebrates the turning over of the clock on this new decade the first major sports appointment comes up in just 42 days as the cauldron will light up the Vancouver Olympics.

The Canadian Games are building up to be an exciting edition and will be hosting approximately 2,500 athletes who will compete in 15 sports and be looking to medal in over 86 separate events.

Since host nation Canada didn’t nab a gold medal during the Calgary Games this might be the face-off moment to change their history.

Betting Choice of the UK is pinning the favorite for the hockey gold medal on the Canadian Hockey Team. And in terms of the outright betting, Canada are listed at 1.9 to take the gold medal.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has just taken a motion to suspend the country’s parliament until the end of the Games in March to allow the country to prepare for "the next stage of Canada's economic action plan.” Opposition politicians are questioning the maneuver as trying to freeze investigation of the nation’s track record in Afghanistan while the world focuses on the Games and local hosts.

Sir Philip Craven, Paralympics president issued his New Year message, “With only 70 days to go, the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games are just around the corner. For ten days in March 2010, the eyes of the world will be focused on excellent Paralympic Winter Sport in Vancouver and Whistler!

“I anticipate fair contests in the five winter sports, with skill, speed, and the joy of participation in the true spirit of Paralympic Sport. With such a dramatic mountainous background, we have a magnificent location which will serve the Paralympic Games at the highest level. We will most certainly see Paralympic Spirit in Motion.”

African World Cup

The 2010 World Cup kicks off in 160 days as South Africa excitedly readies to host the first African edition and president Jacob Zuma has reached out in his New Year address to call on everyone to work together for the success of the event.

2010 Cup ceo Danny Jordaan has also gauged the Cup as being one of the biggest nation-building initiative since the end of apartheid.

From June 11th to the grande final on July 11 the world will be tuned in as the 32 nations fight to take home the gold trophy.
