How Wayne Gretzky achieved yet another milestone

THIS DAY IN SPORT (NOVEMBER 23) MARKS THE . . . 21st anniversay, from 1988, of the day Wayne Gretzky scored his 600th National Hockey League goal. Gretzky, who won four Stanley Cups, was later hailed by many experts as the greatest player of all time. In other sports, this day in 1961 saw Barcelona, of all people, end to Real Madrid’s five-year command of the European Champions Cup. Amid a storm of controversy over the refereeing Barcelona won 2-1 (and 4-3 on aggregate) in Camp Nou. Madrid, led by Alfredo Di Stefano (pictured) and Ferenc Puskas, had reached their zenith earlier in the year – first with the legendary 7-3 European Cup Final defeat of Eintracht Frankfurt then by winning the inaugural World Club Cup against Uruguay’s Penarol. WORLD EVENTS – 1859: Birth of William Bonney, notoriously better known as the outlaw Billy the Kid. 1887: Birth of Frankenstein monster star Boris Karloff. 1910: Hanging in London of the murderer Dr Crippen. 1963: BBC TV broadcast the first episode of the long-running Dr Who saga. 1979: Death of Merle Oberon, whose films included the classic original Wuthering Heights. 1990: Death of fantasist children’s author Roald Dahl.
