Joe DiMaggio and his journey to the New York Yankees

THIS DAY IN SPORT MARKS THE . . . 75th anniversary, from 1934, of the day the New York Yankees purchased the contract of Joe DiMaggio from San Francisco of the Pacific Coast League.  In other sports,  in 1982 this day saw the National Football League (NFL) resume its season after a 57-day player's strike. In 1998 Roy Hodgson’s first Premier League reign came to an end as he was replaced as manager of Blackburn Rovers in the wake of a 2-0 home defeat by fellow strugglers Southampton. Hodgson, now successfully back at Fulham, had been boss at Ewood Park for 16 months. WORLD EVENTS – 1898: Birth of artist Rene Magritte. 1918: Royal Assent granted to Act of Parliament granting British women the right to vote. 1945: Birth of film star Goldie Hawn. 1974: Two IRA bombs killed 20 people and injured 200 more in Birmingham. 1980: An estimated 82m tuned in to TV’s Dallas to find out ‘who shot JR?’.
