Calm before the storm for sport in Vizcaya

THIS DAY IN THE WORLD OF SPORT MARKS . . . the 74th anniversary, from 1935, of the start of the last Spanish football season before the civil war. Athletic Bilbao would bring the championship title back to Vizcaya, two points clear of [now Real] Madrid and with Oviedo third. Barcelona were fifth and Athletic Club de Madrid (now Atletico) and Osasuna were relegated. In other sport, this day in 1958 saw Donald Campbell break the world water speed record in Bluebird on Lake Coniston at an average speed of 248mph. WORLD EVENTS – 1697: Birth of artist William Hogarth. 1759: Birth of Friedrich Schiller, poet whose Ode to Joy was set to music by Beethoven in his ninth symphony. 1871: Journalist Henry Stanley meets missionary Dr David Livingstone at Ujiji. 1880: Birth of sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein. 1925: Birth of Welsh actor Richard Burton.
