Muhammad Ali: the moment it all began

THIS DAY IN THE WORLD OF SPORT MARKS . . . the 49th anniversary, from 1960, of the day American boxer Cassius Clay, later Muhammad Ali, won his first professional fight against Tunney Hunsaker in his home town of Louisville, Kentucky. Earlier that year Clay had won light-heavyweight gold (pictured) at the Rome Olympic Games. In other sports, in 2004, this was the day Romania striker Adrian Mutu was sacked by Chelsea after failing a club dope test. The dispute between player and club is still going through the courts. In 1987 Thomas Hearns won the world middleweight crown, thus becoming the first boxer to have won world titles at four different weights. WORLD EVENTS – 1618: Death of explorer and courtier Sir Walter Raleigh. 1787: Premiere of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. 1863: Foundation of the Red Cross. 1957: Death of Hollywood film mogul Louis B Mayer.
