THIS DAY (OCTOBER 15) MARKS THE . . .  20th anniversary of the day in 1989 when Wayne Gretzky, while playing for the Los Angeles Kings, overtok Gordie Howe's National Hockey League record of 1,850 career points. In other sports, this day in 1973 is the 36th anniversary of manager Brian Clough and assistant Peter Taylor being forced out of Derby County by chairman Sam Longson, 17 months after leading the club to their first-ever league title. WORLD EVENTS – 70BC: Birth of the Latin poet Virgil. 1582: First day of the Gregorian Calendar after its adoption by Pope Gregory XIII, eliminating 10 days so October 5 became October 15. 1928: First flight of the airship Graf Zeppelin from Friedrichshafen, southern Germany, to New Jersey. 1961: Founding of Amnesty International. 1964: Death of song writer Cole Porter.
