MONACO: The Peace and Sport organization has extended its mission to show how sport can be a forceful catalyst for uniting people.

The 19th Georges Bertellotti Golden Podium Awards at the Sportel symposium in Monaco, saw Peace and Sport announce this year's winning image award - honoured by a partnership of Peace and Sport with Sportel Monaco and the news Agency, Agence France-Press.

The award for the best image of fraternity through sport was for a photo of the granddaughter of the German athlete Luz Long and the granddaughter of American champion Jesse Owens, with IAAF president Lamine Diack during the medal-giving for the long jump at the 2009 Athletics World Championships in Berlin.

Long had helped Owens when they competed at the 1936 Berlin Olympics so this was a touching reunion for the two women to pose together reminiscent of their grandfathers’ friendship dating back to those controversial Games.

Joel Bouzou, founder and president of Peace and Sport,  said: "Sport will never be a vehicle for the discrimination and intolerance that surrounded the 1936 Olympics. On the contrary, it upholds the values of peace, brotherhood and friendship among nations; values that inspire Peace and Sport and all of us.

“The Peace and Sport Award for the Image of the Year 2009 is proof that the sporting mentality transcends time.”

"SPORTELMonaco is proud to welcome Peace and Sport for the second consecutive year to announce this prestigious award,” said David Tomatis, Sportel ceo. The Georges Bertellotti Golden Podium Awards acknowledge the best sports photos of the year. And what can be more beautiful than these gestures of brotherhood born around sport?"

Eric Axelson, head of AFP Marketing Group for Sport, said: "With the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and the football World Cup in South Africa on the horizon  and after the announcement of the choice of Rio as host city for the Olympic Games in 2016, we can only hope that there will be plenty more symbolic moments like this. But we should for further than symbolic gestures, and, as Peace and Sport suggests, initiate actions to aid the less fortunate. "

Presentation of the award will take place at the 3rd Peace and Sport International Forum on November 26 in Monaco. The meeting will be held under the patronage of Prince Albert of Monaco gathering more than 300 delegates from worldwide peace and sports organizations.

Allied with the UN

Peace and Sport has also recently forged a significant new alliance with the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP), and the United Nations Office for Partnerships (UNOP) to work together.

The partnership with the UN further reinforces the validity and the depth of the Peace and Sport mission.

Wilfried Lemke, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, said: "One of the main tasks of my mandate is to lead and coordinate the efforts of the United Nations system in order to better integrate sport and physical education into our programmes worldwide. Encouraging collaboration and partnerships in this area is one of my priorities.

"I am convinced that the UN has found a worthwhile ally in Peace and Sport to use sport as an innovative catalyst for social change and building sustainable peace.”

UNOSDP and UNOP will also be collaborating with the 3rd Forum to be held in Monaco in November.
