THIS DAY (SEPTEMBER 29) MARKS THE . . . 32nd anniversary, from 1977, of the day American boxing official Eva Shain became the first woman to judge at a world heavyweight title fight - between Earnie Shavers and Muhammad Ali. In other sports, in  2001, this day saw the remarkable Premier League match at White Hart Lane in which Tottenham Hotspur led Manchester United 3-0 at half-time only to lose 5-3. Richards, Ferdinand and Ziege scored for Spurs then Cole, Blanc, Van Nistelrooy, Veron and Beckham for United. WORLD EVENTS – 1758: Birth of (future Admiral) Horatio Nelson. 1829: First ‘peelers’ or ‘bobbies’ appear on London streets. 1936: Birth of future Italian prime minister and millionaire businessman Silvio Berlusconi – also the president of Milan. 1943: Birth of Polish trade union leader then president Lech Walesa. 1952: Death of John Cobb, trying to break the world water speed record in Crusader on Loch Ness. 1973: Death of poet W H Auden.
