LAUSANNE: A declaration from the World Kids’ Sports Summit in Yokohama has been added to the documents collection at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.

Two Japanese school students undertook the presentation to Dr Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, and he promised to find an appropriate place of safe-keeping. The declaration, a call by the world’s new sporting generation to spread the spirit of fair play across the world, was issued by the summit in the Japanese city on August 21.

Wataru Sado, a fifth-grade student from Yokohama, read out the declaration and then presented it to Dr Rogge. Megumi Terasaki, a sixth-grade student from Tsukuba, presented the IOC president with a memento representing children from five continents joining hands to make a better world.

Yuji Nishiyama, the sports promotion department director of Yokohama city, then presented a letter of appreciation from the mayor and a commemorative plate which had been created to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the port.

Others attending the meeting included representatives of the Yokohama International Triathlon, the Japan Triathlon Union and the Japanese Olympic Committee.

Young generation

Rogge said: “I am very pleased to know that the Sports Summit was held and the declaration was adopted by mainly by the Japanese young generation based on the spirit of fair play. As you know, the meaning of sports is not only to win or make good records. Instead, like judo which originated in Japan, it is an opportunity to learn manners and to respect others.

"By spreading this idea to the people in the world, I believe we can contribute to world peace. I hope the young people who participated in the summit will continue the Olympic movement in their countries and regions. The declaration will be displayed in the special space in Olympic Museum.”
