THIS DAY (SEPTEMBER 22) MARKS THE . . . 82nd anniversary, from 1927, of the day Gene Tunney successfully defended his world heavyweight title against Jack Dempsey in the famous ‘long count’ fight. In other sports, in 1993,  when European champions Marseille were stripped of their French league title after revelations that they had fixed a crucial match against Valenciennes. Marseille were never, as is often erroneously claimed, stripped of their European crown. However they were barred by UEFA from defending their title. WORLD EVENTS – 1827: Joseph Smith, founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, announces thediscovery of the Book of Mormon. 1880: Birth of suffragette Christabel Pankhurst, daughter of Emmeline Pankhurtst. 1934: Death of 265 miners in a pit disaster at Gresford mine, Wrexham. 1958: Birth of Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. 1989: Death of composer Irving Berlin.
