TAMPA: The Tokyo bid team revealed how they will be ‘setting the stage for heroes’ by bringing a team of world-class Japanese athletes to try to persuade the International Olympic Committee to give them the vote to host the 2016 Games.

Focus on athletes has been a key point of the Tokyo bid team and they plan to play their trump card with 13 national sports heroes bringing to the table 31 Olympic and Paralympic medals including 11 golds as testimonials.

Dr Ichiro Kono, bid ceo, said: “In line with our promise to host the most athlete-focused Games in history, our delegation for the IOC Session in Copenhagen will include a large number of Japan’s finest Olympians and Paralympians who each believe in the 100-year legacy the Tokyo 2016 Games will create for sport, humanity and the youth of tomorrow.

“We are thrilled to have these heroes in our team and together we share the passionate goal of returning the Games to athletes and setting the stage for heroes to inspire youth worldwide."

Tokyo is also urging newly elected Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama to join them in Denmark to help convince the IOC.
