THIS DAY (SEPTEMBER 15) MARKS THE . . . marks the 31st anniversary from 1978 when Muhammad Ali defeated former Olympic champion Leon Spinks to become the first boxer to regain the world heavyweight title for the third time. In other sports, in 1951 this day sees the birth of Holland midfielder Johan Neeskens, a key figure in the Dutch total football development of the 1970s when Ajax won three European Champions Cups and Holland finished runners-up at the 1974 and 1978 World Cups. In 1985 the United States lose golf’s Ryder Cup for the first time since 1957, beaten by the newly-rconstituted Europe team. WORLD EVENTS – 1877: Death at 35 of Crazy Horse, Sioux leader at the Battle of Little Big Horn. 1928: Nobel Prize-winner Sir Alexander Fleming discovers penicillin.
