2016 Olympics: Tokyo confident it can meet 'all challenges'

TOKYO: Ichiro Kono, chair and ceo of Tokyo's 2016 Olympic bid team, is confident that the city would "satisfy all challenges"after the publication of the IOC evaluation commission's report.

Kono expressed appreciation for "diligent and professional" way in which the commission had undertaken its work and the fact that it had clearly appreciated Tokyo's ambition to host Games whcih would "inspire world youth to embrace sport, healthy living and the Olympic movement."

He added: "The report praises Tokyo 2016 for promoting of a 'contemporary Games' and the fact that our 'vision combines vitality and sustainability, heritage and innovation', and creates "a 100-year Olympic legacy'."

Compact venue plan

Kono was also pleased with confirmation that Tokyo's team had successfully explained its concept of a socially, environmentally and economically sustainable Games incorporating a compact venue plan to capitalise on the city's extensive public transport network.

A central feature of the Tokyo candidacy has been its guarantee of full financial support from both national and local government.

Kono said: "We appreciate that the commission understand our fully achievable budget, which is based on the double insurance policy provided by the Tokyo and national governments. They clearly recognized that 'the Tokyo metropolitan government has financially guaranteed the Games and has established an Olympic Hosting Reserve Fund of $3.7bn."

He added: "We have worked very hard to respond to IOC feedback since the commission's visit to April. We are confident we already have a plan that will fully satisfy all challenges and demonstrate our ability to be their most reliable and dependable partner."
