This day in the world of sport . . .

THIS DAY (AUGUST 23) MARKS THE . . . 71st anniversary, from 1938, of the day England cricketer [later Sir] Len Hutton scored a then world-record 364 in the fifth Test against Australia at The Oval. Coincidentally, this day could mark another England cricket achievement in Ashes history at the same London venue. In other sports, this day is the first anniversary from 2008, of Argentina retaining the Olympic football gold medal, beating Nigeria 1-0 in a heat-marred final in the Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing. Benfica’s Angel Di Maria scored the second-half winning goal as players on both sides wilted all around him. WORLD EVENTS – 1926: Death of Hollywood legend Rudolf Valentino. 1947: Birth of playwright Willie Russell.
