THIS DAY (AUGUST 21) MARKS THE . . . 38th anniversary, from 1971, of the day Laura Baugh, at 16, became the youngest winner in the history of the United States Women's Amateur Golf championship. In other sports, in 1971, Liverpool became the first club in English football to wear a shirt advert, for Hitachi. Initially both BBC and ITV refused to transmit Liverpool matches because they believed the visibility contravened their rules about advertising.
