TOKYO/BERLIN: Tokyo's 2016 bid leaders have been encouraged in their efforts at the World Athletics Championships by confirmation from Tokyo that they now have 17 partner companies - a strong demonstration of Japanese business support in the face of the worldwide recession.

That support demonstrates the attraction to corporate Japan of the potential to reach more than 3bn prime-time television viewers across the Asia-Pacific region, a market which would be unprecedented in the history of the Games.

Over the last four weeks residential builder Daiwa House Industry, freight company Yamato Transport and brewer/beverage company Asahi Breweries, have joined the list of official partners. All three companies consider themselves as world leaders in their respective sectors.

Further business backing has been pledged by the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which represents more than 80,000 companies and has established an Olympic and Paralympic committee to coordinate its support.

Ichiro Kono, chair and ceo of Tokyo 2016, said: "I am hugely encouraged by the level of corporate support. It's an incredible milestone, to have 17 partner companies. They include some of Japan’s biggest brands and are hugely passionate about Tokyo 2016 setting the stage for heroes."

The International Olympic Committee decides in Copenhagen on October 2 whether Tokyo has succeeded in its bid against competition from Chicago, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro.
