LONDON: Great Britain’s plans to start building a significant track and field momentum on the road to London 2012 have been hit by injury to Germain Mason, who won silver in the Beijing Games high jump.
The Jamaican-born 26-year-old will miss the World Championships which start at the end of next week in Berlin after suffering an ankle ligament injury during last Friday's Grand Prix in Stockholm. He will miss the rest of the season.
Charles van Commenee, UK Athletics’ new Dutch chief, will also miss European Under-23 200m champion Toby Sandeman.
The 21-year-old won the world trials and UK Championships in Birmingham last month and followed up with success at the European Under-23 Championships in Lithuania. But he has been forced out by a foot injury which hampered his training ahead of Berlin.
Van Commenee said: “Toby has been receiving treatment and has been unable to train over the last couple of weeks which is not exactly ideal preparation. The loss of Germaine Mason is also particularly disappointing but his injury is, unfortunately, an occupational hazard."
