TODAY (AUGUST 05) MARKS THE . . . 25th anniversary, from 1984, of American Joan Benoit’s victory in the first women’s Olympic marathon. Benoit’s first major success at the distance had been the 1979 Boston marathon. She only just made it to Los Angeles after recovering from knee surgery two weeks before the trials. AUGUST 05, in other sports, in 1921 KDKA Radio of Pittsburg broadcast the first live commentary on a baseball game, between Pirates and Philadelphia. WORLD EVENTS – 1305: Death of legendary Scottish hero ‘Braveheart’ William Wallace. 1962: Death, in Los Angeles, of Marilyn Monroe.
