Berlin 1936: lighting the torch

TODAY (AUGUST 02) MARKS THE . . . 73rd anniversary, in 1936, of the opening heats of the 100m at the Berlin Olympics when the United States sprinter Jesse Owens won through to the final in a time of 10.3sec. Owens went on to run his way to gold medal legend in defiance of the Nazi German hierarchy and their racist policies and theories. AUGUST 02, in other sports, in 1959, saw Pele score what he once described as his “most beautiful” goal – for Santos against Juventus of Sao Paulo. WORLD EVENTS – 1865: First publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. 1876: Death of Wild Bill Hickok, shot dead while playing poker in Deadwood, South Dakota. 1922: Death of telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell.
