TAMPA/LAUSANNE: The International Olympic Committee has launched the bid process for the 2018 winter Games. Next step is inviting national Olympic committees to submit the names of the cities they would like to promote; they have until October 15 to do so.

This date falls just after the October 2nd vote for the host city of the 2016 summer Games at the IOC Session in Copenhagen, Denmark.

During the Vancouver Olympics February 12-28 the cities will be able to study Games’ operations with the IOC’s observer programme.

By March 15, 2010, cities must application files and letters of guarantee to the IOC. From March to June the IOC will examine the files and give replies.

Then in June 2010 the IOC executive board will accept the Candidate Cities and the race really gets rolling as the second phase gets underway.

Next step is the submission of the candidature file on January 11, 2011 of the overall bid book and prepare for the IOC evaluation visit. Visits are set for Feb-March 2011 then the IOC will be carrying out their own detailed assessment that will be published in a report one month prior to the scheduled vote.

Finally, the vote for the 2018 host city will be held almost two years from now - on July 6, 2011 - during the 123rd IOC Session in Durban, South Africa.

So far Munich, Germany, Annecy, France, and PyeongChang, Korea have expressed serious interest in putting forth a candidature.
