Team GB off to fast start at youngsters' Olympic festival

HELSINKI: Team GB topped the medals table after the first three days of competition at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Tampere, Finland. The British tally of six gold, three silver and three bronze placed them narrowly ahead of Germany (5-6-3), Russia (5-3-4) and Italy (5-1-5).

Mark England, Team GB's chef de mission, was thrilled both for the immdeiate encourage this provided the rest of the squad but also looking ahead, with potential in mind, for the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

He said: said: “We’re delighted to be leading 49 other nations with just two days of competition remaining. We have witnessed a number of truly outstanding performances which bode well for the next generation of British Olympic sport.

"We’re now consistently winning at the highest level, and it’s great that we’re beating powerful Olympic nations such as Russia, Germany, Italy, and France."

An across-the-board success was particularly encouraging, said England.

He added: "Four out of our six sports (athletics, cycling, judo and swimming) have already contributed to the Team GB medal board, with the tennis boys just one match away from securing a medal in the doubles and our gymnasts now going for individual success following a pair of encouraging fifth place finishes in the team events."
