TAMPA/LAUSANNE: An international team league championship is one of the flagship programmes being launched by the newly-created World Series of Boxing.

Based on franchises in 12 cities around the world the event – run alongside individual championships - marks a new beginning in boxing.

This is because WSB, created by the the International Boxing Association (AIBA), offers a platform to thousands of boxers who want to compete in a professionally-organized competition whilst retaining the right to represent their country at the Olympic Games.

Eight franchises have already been secured and the competition launch has been scheduled for September 2010. Referees and judges, coaches and supervisor candidates will be selected and trained immediately after the AIBA World Championships in Milan.

Ownership of WSB, headquartered in Lausanne, is shared by AIBA, as a majority shareholder, and marketing partner IMG.

WSB will have its own management structure to oversee development and promotion and manage day-to-day relationships with the franchisees. Board members are AIBA president Ching-Kuo Wu, Humbert Furgoni (WSB commission chairman), Ho Kim (AIBA executive director) and Julian Brand (IMG senior vice-president). Kim is also chief executive officer with Ivan Khodabakhsh the chief operating officer.

AIBA is a non-profit making international organization, which was founded as the Fédération Internationale de Boxe Amateur (FIBA) in 1920.
