TOKYO: Tokyo 2016’s bid received a top-scoring promotional outing at the opening match of the 2009 J.League soccer season between FC Tokyo and Albirex Niigata.

Fans at the Ajinomoto Stadium signed an official Tokyo 2016 flag while the main screen in the 50,000-seat stadium also broadcast the Tokyo 2016 promotional video. Thus support for the bid to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to Tokyo is being reflected across all levels of society.

Albirex thrashed Tokyo 4-1 and followed up by defeating 2008 champions Kashima Antlers 2-1 to become one of the only two clubs to have won both initial games.

The J.League season sees the official Tokyo 2016 Banner displayed during fixtures at all of the 28 J1 stadiums during matches up until October 2 – when the identity of the host city will be decided by the IOC in Copenhagen.

Dr Ichiro Kono, chairman and ceo of Tokyo 2016, said: “Japan loves sport, and the start of a new J.League season is exciting for millions of people across the country. So we are delighted that Tokyo 2016 banners will be inspiring athletes and fans during the 2009 J-league season.”

The International Olympic Committee decides on the 2016 host in Copenhagen. Tokyo’s rivals are Chicago, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro.
