London 2012 reaches out to young designers
SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT / Sports Features Communications
LONDON: The London 2012 organizing committee has launched a national competition for budding graphic designers ages 16-21 to create the official education logo for the Games. The new design will infill the London 2012 logo in the same way the Union Jack creation was done for the handover from the Beijing Games.
The competition offers an unparalleled opportunity to jump start the careers of talented aspiring designers and reaches out to the youth community to get them involved.
The competition logo will be awarded, together with the Paralympic logo, in September of this year to be utilized by schools, colleges and local authority education providers who embrace the ‘Get Set’ network.
Sebastian Coe, Chairman of the Games, said: “Schools and colleges wanting to join the ‘Get Set’ network must place young people in the driving seat and empower them to demonstrate a commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values.“
“Thus, it is only right that the logo we award be designed by young creative talent. The competition demonstrates our commitment to involve young people in the London 2012 Games in many different ways.”
A design briefing was held at Hackney College in Shoreditch, London by LOCOG’s Amanda Jennings, Head of Brand and Marketing and Nick Fuller, Head of Education. Entrants can watch a short film of the briefing, and obtain the competition rules and guidelines, at www.london2012.com/logocompetition.
The closing date for entries is June 5th and a shortlist of 4-6 finalists will present their designs to a panel of judges including BMX world champion and ‘Get Set’ hero, Olympian Shanaze Reade.
