SOCHI: Sochi 2014 has signed a $180m deal with Russian oil firm Rosneft to become a tier one fuel supplier for the Winter Games. This also marks the first sponsor to sign on for the Paralympics.

The deal was signed today by Dmitry Chernyshenko, president and ceo of Sochi 2014, and Sergei Bogdanchikov, president of Rosneft. The official signing was also attended by the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Alexander Zhukov and the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Kozak.

“It’s extremely important for Sochi 2014 that Rosneft became the general partner for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games," said Chernyshenko.

“This demonstrates that even in a difficult economic situation, Russian businesses are not neglecting their social responsibility. They are prepared to invest in projects aimed at improving opportunities for people with disabilities as well as constructing the necessary infrastructure to meet their needs.”

He noted that the agreement demonstrated a commitment to fund infrastructure developments within Sochi and the Krasnodar region, projects crucial in the preparation of Russia’s first Winter Games.

With this sponsorship level Rosneft will be able to market itself as the 'Sochi 2014 general partner for oil and oil products.'

“We are very happy to win the right to be a Sochi 2014 Partner,” said Segrei Bogdanchikov, president of Rosneft. "Sochi 2014 is an important national project and supporting it will increase the profitability of our company.”

The multi-faceted deal will see Rosneft become fuel supplier on preferential terms to the Organizing Committee, the Russian National Olympic and Paralympic Committees, the Russian Olympic and Paralympic team and state corporation Olympstroy as well as the use of Rosneft’s recreational and sanatorium facilities in the southern region of Russia.

Rosneft will play a vital role in the delivery of the Russian Olympic project and infrastructure development in the region through the construction of more than 150 new petrol stations.

More than half of these facilities will be in the Krasnodar region, with the rest positioned in vital areas on main federal highways in nine regions of Russia. The company will also develop snowcat and boat refueling facilities in Sochi to aid the development of the city into an all-year-round tourist center.

Rosneft will support Sochi 2014 in many other ways during the Games. This will include the supply of fuel on preferential terms not only to the Organizing Committee, the Russian National Olympic and Paralympic Committees but also to the Russian Olympic and Paralympic team and the State Corporation “Olympstroy” as well as the use of Rosneft’s recreational and sanatorium facilities in the southern region of Russia.

To date other tier one sponsors for Sochi are Megafon as the mobile partner and Rostelecom  as telecommunications partner. Coca-Cola, Panasonic and Samsung have already signed on with the Worldwide Olympic Partner program.
