LAUSANNE: Softball has gone right to the heart of the Olympic ‘capital’ by opening an office in La Maison du Sport International in Lausanne.

The complex is home to 20 international federations and softball – one of the seven sports bidding for a Games presence in 2016 – hopes the creation of a European base underlines its message about the sport’s expansion in both Europe and around the world.

ISF president Don Porter said: “We are determined to use this location to forge stronger relationships with member federations and potential new federations in Europe.  We've been trying to get space at MSI for some time and jumped at this chance.

"Softball is growing faster in Europe than anywhere else in the world and we're delighted to be able to support them from close at hand."

Hein Verbruggen, chairman of the General Association of International Sports Federations, welcomed softball’s Lausanne ‘landing.’

He said: “It is important for softball to be close to the other summer federations to share best practices and solutions to some of the challenges faced by the global recession. In this respect Lausanne is the perfect place for the ISF to have an office. Equally, other federations will benefit from softball's strengths in anti-doping policy and inclusiveness.”

The ISF's world headquarters is in Plant City, Florida. The sport competes, before the IOC in Copenhagen in October, for access to the 2016 Games in competition with baseball, golf, karate, rugby union, roller sports and squash.
