MADRID: Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, mayor of Madrid and one of the leaders of the 2016 Olympic bid, has been voted Most Relevant Political Figure in Spain by the Foreign Press Correspondents’ Association.

Gallardon was praised for achieving a “real democratic conscience in [the] country” on the strength of his work as president of the Olympic and Paralympic bid. His municipal government has guaranteed financing and full backing as a candidate city, in which 77pc of the sports venues are already built or under construction.

At the award ceremony, Gallardon urged politicians and the media to work together to build a better society. He also added: “Nothing is more important to me than bringing the 2016 Games to Madrid.”

Gallardon promised “a vibrant, exciting Games in our beautiful, welcoming, multicultural city. This assurance is hugely important during an economic crisis – there is no need to burden our government or citizens with any financial concerns.”

The International Olympic Committee decides in Copenhagen on October 2 between 2016 bids from Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo.
