MADRID: A further crucial brick has been laid on the foundations of the Madrid bid to host the 2016 Olympics with a commitment on accommiodation from the capital's hotels association.

An upgraded, updated and refined repeat of the agreement set up for the 2012 bid was sigend off by Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón and Jesús Gatell on behalf of the hotels' association.

Ruiz-Gallardon hailed the latest step forward by saying: "This is the proof that Madrid 2016 really is the candidacy of everyone. The success we are chasing next October will be a success for everyone who has put their money on this city."

The agreement will be included in the bid book which is to be submitted formally to the International Olympic Committee on February 12.

Ruiz-Gallardon said it guaranteed that "the whole Olympic family" will be accommodated in Madrid. He believed that this match the construction commitment by which 77 per cent of Madrid's venues were either already built or under way.

He added: "The commitment of the hotel sector reinforces the solidarity, reliability and solvency of our Olympic project, converting it into a strategic factor of our candidacy."

Tourism magnet

This places the Spanish capital – alongside London, Paris, Rome and Berlin – among the top five European capitals in terms of tourism.

Ruiz-Gallardon added: "If Madrid is chosen to host the 2016 Olympics the investments in infrastructure, Olympic legacy and international will be an amazing boost for tourism. The millions of TV spectators – alongside thousands of athletes, Olympic family members and journalists – will make the Olympic Games an opportunity to know and increase interest in this city for millions of potential tourists."
