TAMPA: The Italian roller sports federation has re-elected president Hon. Sabatino Aracu at their general assembly held in Rome this weekend for another quadriennium 2008-2012. Aracu is currently president of the international roller sports federation (FIRS) that is one of the 7 sports trying for a place on the 2016 Olympic program.

The electoral meeting was held at the Hotel Summit in Rome just like the last one in 2004 but this time it was not just an ordinary re-election. For the first time in a long while Aracu was challenged by Ferrucio Govoni also running for the presidency together with his supporters also vying for several places in the executive board.

However Aracu took home a solid 77% of the votes and his team of candidates maintained control of the executive board.

President Aracu was pleased, "It has been a great assembly and a competitive and sometimes bitter race, but always within fair bounds.”

“I appreciated very much that the debate focused exclusively on the issues relative to our sport and never degenerated to a personal level.”

“I am honored by the fact that after so many years the clubs still want to entrust me and my team with the job of leading the Federation, it is a sign of appreciation of the work that we have carried out.”

“We’ll start this new quadriennium with a lot of passion as we will be up against many important challenges. As I acknowledged in my report given that there was some really intense team work we noted that some mistakes were made. Therefore we will refocus on these with the necessary humility to fine tune our interventions as we strive to offer our athletes and our sports environment the highest level and best support possible.”

He concluded, “Let me thank the federation’s staff for the splendid work done during this assembly."

All 7 of the sports in competition for a place on the program of the 2016 Olympic Games are currently working on questionnaires for the International Olympic Committee to asses their overall growth and universality.
