MONTREAL: The World Anti-Doping Agency assesses this weekend what measures are needed to ensure worldwide consistency in the fight against doping in sport.

Evidence will be put before the foundation board in the first official report on anti-doping organizations’ compliance with the WADA code. The executive committee and foundation board meet respectively today and tomorrow in Montreal.

Explaining the significance of the meetings, director-general David Howman said: “These are an opportunity for representatives of the sports movement and governments sitting around the table to discuss the latest advances and challenges in various areas of the fight against doping.

“It’s a 24-7-365 responsibility and WADA works relentlessly to protect the health of athletes and the integrity of sport worldwide.”

Assessing the signifiance of the report, he added: “It’s the first time an official report on anti-doping organizations’ compliance with the WADA code will be discussed by the board.

Framework for rules and policies

“WADA has the responsibility of monitoring anti-doping organizations’ compliance with this document that provides the framework for harmonized anti-doping rules and policies in all sports and countries.

“This compliance report is an important element in worldwide anti-doping, and it will give WADA’s stakeholders a good indication of what remains to be done to ensure that effective anti-doping activities are in place in all sports and countries of the world.”

The report follows a two-year review which should demontrate to the board which anti-doping organizations are not up to the standard.

WADA will also review advances in the development of the Athlete Passport concept, consider the 2009 budget for approval, assess for approval a number of social science research projects and review updates on the implementation of the revised Code and International Standard, which takes effect on January 1.
