TAMPA: Sergey Bubka, sports legend and the greatest all time pole-vaulter, has launched the Bubka Podium Sports Foundation Scholarship to aid underprivileged families and children in India.

The IOC Member and Ukrainian champion pole vaulter is also senior vice-president of the International Association of Athletics Federations and dedicates much of his time to giving back to the sporting community. He serves as chairman of the Coordination Commission for the inaugural Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010.

The scholarship was created for the Community Aid and Sponsorship Program (CASP) and will be implemented in 2009. It is designed to aid young people showing outstanding talent and sporting spirit and will offer assistance for nutritional support, equipment, coaching and entry fees for sports events.

“Creating the Sergey Bubka Podium Foundation Award for CASP means I can give children from this area a chance to really pursue their sporting dreams,” Bubka declared at the CASP launch.

“These awards are not only about sporting prowess, but also seek to promote the values of sportsmanship and respect which I consider to be particularly important.

“I am very impressed with the projects that CASP undertake to help families and children in India and their values fit in nicely with my own plans for the Sergey Bubka Podium Foundation which I will be launching later this year.”

Bubka was honored this year with the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication to grassroots sport and launched the new scholarship with Ramesh Gorwadkar, the CASP Project Manager.

Gorwadkar said: “We are delighted to welcome Sergey Bubka to our CASP centre in Pune. This has been an exciting time for the city with an array of young international athletes taking part in the Youth Commonwealth Games and it is fantastic news that now some of our own local children will now get the support they need to train to the highest level.”

CASP is also supported by the Indian government, the United Nations and other corporate sponsors and focuses on assisting children and families through a series of programs including education, support and medical assistance.

Bubka regularly visits sports establishments around the world mentoring young people to embrace sports and to support the various initiatives. These have included the Newham Sports Academy in London, England, Care for Children in Beijing, China, and the Sport-the-Bridge initiative in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

While in India, Bubka was also attending the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune.
