RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazilian hotel representatives have offered their support for the first time to Rio de Janeiro's bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

Bid president Carlos Arthur Nuzman received on Thursday, at the Guanabara Palace, the state government seat, pledges of support from the president of the Brazilian Hotel Industry Association (ABIH) Álvaro Bezerra de Mello, from the president of ABIH-Rio, Alfredo Lopes and from the president of the Union of Hotels, Bars, and Restaurants of Rio de Janeiro (SindiRio), Alexandre Sampaio.

Three key government levels had worked together on the project in support of the 2016 campaign - the governor, Sérgio Cabral, together with the minister of tourism, Luiz Barretto and the mayor-elect of Rio, Eduardo Paes.

Hoteliers' important role

Cabral said: “During the 2007 Rio Pan American Games, we demonstrated our ability to work together. Now, we are repeating those efforts to help to make Rio the host of the 2016 Games. I think the hoteliers understand the important role they play in the bid. This act clearly shows the mobilization of all sectors of society with the bid."

Barretto added: “With the support of the hotels the bid is not just Rio’s, but belongs to all of Brazil and South America. The federal government will support and guarantee excellent conditions for hospitality during the 2016 Games.”

He emphasized that the Games would be a window of opportunity to promote Brazil and South America as tourist destinations.
The hotelier support will strongly enhance the Rio 2016 official Candidature File which will be handed in to the International Olympic Committee on February 12.

“Accommodation is vital to an Olympic bid," said a delighted Nuzman. "With this commitment, hoteliers are guaranteeing the Olympic Family and all visitors comfortable accommodation, which dignifies the city.”
