LAUSANNE: Rupert Murdoch's Fox Turkey has been awarded the transmission rights for Turkish broadcasting of the Sochi 2014 and 2016 Olympic Games.

The International Olympic Committee launched the tendering process for the sale of broadcast rights for the Sochi 2014 and the 2016 Summer Games in European areas last May 8. The host city for the 2016 edition of the Olympics will be elected next October in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The IOC chose Fox Turkey on its ability to reach the broadest Turkish audience and for the utilization of all platforms including free viewing television, cable TV, internet and mobile phone.

This is the third deal with a European Murdoch network so far this year after Sky Italia was awarded the 2014 and 2016 Games rights earlier this month and after the 2010 and 2012 rights being set in February.

IOC president Jacques Rogge said: "Fox Turkey presented a comprehensive package that will allow not only the broadest coverage of the Olympic Games but also the promotion of Olympic sports and Olympic values beyond the 16 days of competition.

"We look forward to building a strong working relationship with Fox Turkey ahead of the Winter Games in Sochi in 2014."

Multi-platform utilization essential

The IOC is looking for more ways to reach to a younger viewing audience by utilizing multi-platform means to spark interest in the Games.

"Fox Turkey is recognised as one of the most progressive and innovative Turkish broadcasters and has become increasingly popular amongst younger audiences," said IOC vice-president Thomas Bach, who led the negotiations. "We look forward to working with Fox Turkey to making innovative coverage of the Olympic Games available to sports fans across Turkey."

Dave Reid, general manager of Fox Turkey, said: "This is a historic development for our company. We are excited and proud that the IOC has selected Fox as its broadcast partner for Turkey in 2014 and 2016. The Olympic Games will be our company's most important project and we are committed to delivering a world-class multi-media event. This is a sign of our commitment to the future of broadcasting in Turkey and our close connection to the values of the Olympic Movement."

The Fox network is widely expected to submit a bid for US broadcast rights as they go to tender in 2009 prior to the 2016 host city election. NBC has the US rights through 2012 and will most likely re-bid for the next editions.
